QUOTES FROM OUR COMMUNITY

“My love of yoga practice, the wonderful yoga teachers I knew in the Berkshires, and the absence of a studio dedicated to holistic healing practices, inspired me to build the studio space that began as Berkshire Mountain Yoga at 30 Elm Court. I am so delighted that 20 years later this beautiful studio is still thriving and encouraging new generations of students and practitioners.”

– Karen Allen, Founder of Berkshire Mountain Yoga which is today YogaGB

“It is our devoted, disciplined students which have kept YogaGB blossoming into the vibrant community it is today.”

-Deborah Salem, YogaGB owner & director 2006-2013

“YogaGB is my hidden sanctuary, a beloved community, an essential part of my life. I leave everything behind when I walk into the beautiful studio, ready to be inspired by the region’s finest teachers, whose yoga teachings apply equally to life on or off the mat.”

-Laurie Norton Moffatt, Long time student and Norman Rockwell Museum Director

“It is an incredible honor to tend to such a sacred space and to serve such a vibrant community of students and teachers. The exceptional longevity truly speaks to the love that is fostered here and the foresight of what our predecessors built.”

-Gillian Gorman, Current YogaGB Co-Director & Owner

“When I moved away to Chicago, felt lonely and alone, stuggling to find my way,  all I could think of was the “homey” feel of Yoga Great Barrington and all the familiar faces and the warm, inviting nature of the community and all the amazing work being accomplished there.  I eventually made it back and couldn’t be more satisfied!!”

-Mark Gerow

“The landscape of Great Barrington, the Berkshires and Yoga instruction continues to grow and evolve. Our responsibility is always to evolve with these changes in a manner which serves and compliments what is at the heart of YogaGB.”

-Scott Moraes, Current YogaGB Co-Director & Owner

OUR HISTORY

The broad, pine planked, second floor studio located just off of Main Street was first established by acclaimed actress and fiber artist Karen Allen as Berkshire Mountain Yoga in 1995, after she was introduced to the area through her work in regional theatres including the Berkshire Theatre Festival in Stockbridge, MA and the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Williamstown, MA.

In the two decades since its founding, the studio has been nurtured and maintained by a select group of proprietors, including Alice Smith (2000-2006), and Deborah Salem who re-christened the studio Yoga Great Barrington when she took ownership in 2006.

After seven years of stewardship, Salem hand-selected YogaGB’s current proprietors, Radiance Yoga founders and co-directors Gillian Gorman and Scott Moraes — who boast a collective 30+ years experience in yoga instruction, pilates, and massage therapy — to continue YogaGB’s legacy as a cherished sanctuary within the community.
